Project Context
Safran Group, a major player in the aerospace and defence sector, has set ambitious CO₂ emission reduction targets:
To achieve these targets, the company must collect, consolidate, and ensure the reliability of energy and environmental data from its sites worldwide, while complying with new regulatory requirements for non-financial reporting (CSRD).
For several years, Safran has already undertaken initiatives to:
This approach has now been strengthened to also:
- 35% reduction in emissions (Scopes 1 and 2) by 2025 compared to 2018
- 50% reduction by 2030
To achieve these targets, the company must collect, consolidate, and ensure the reliability of energy and environmental data from its sites worldwide, while complying with new regulatory requirements for non-financial reporting (CSRD).
For several years, Safran has already undertaken initiatives to:
- Collect energy and environmental data from its sites via Enablon
- Calculate its GHG emissions
- Consolidate its data (including emissions) at the Safran Group level
This approach has now been strengthened to also:
- Calculate emission projections based on activity
- Collect and monitor the impact of decarbonisation actions implemented by sites
- Allocate the necessary budgets to implement actions
- Manage performance to achieve the set objectives
Strategic challenges to address
To effectively manage its carbon performance and meet regulatory requirements, Safran faced several strategic and operational challenges, namely:
- Data reliability: Ensuring 100% site responses and securing the quality of collected information
- Maintaining and developing skills: Retaining contributor expertise while providing effective training for new employees
- Optimising the data collection process: Facilitating the use of the Enablon tool for contributors, while enabling effective monitoring of collection campaigns by company carbon representatives and the Group Climate Department
- Achieving decarbonisation targets: Ensuring that implemented actions enable the achievement of emission reduction objectives
- Regulatory compliance and audit-ready data: Preparing for CSRD obligations and facilitating data verification by auditors
Analysis and Diagnosis
Situation Analysis
The Enablon technology is generally well-mastered by users, promoting effective adoption within the organisation. However, several areas for improvement remain:
- Heterogeneous site maturity: Some sites still lack justification for reported variations or fail to respond. Targeted support is needed to strengthen their autonomy and the quality of contributions
- New user training: To maintain a consistent level of expertise and ensure optimal use of the tool, a training system for newcomers is essential
- Updating reporting scope: The current scope must be adjusted to accurately reflect the financial perimeter, notably through updating the entities involved
- Updating the indicator framework: To ensure compliance with evolving non-financial reporting regulations, the framework of indicators to be collected must be regularly reviewed
Tools and technologies used
Safran primarily relies on the Enablon tool, valued for its flexibility and robustness. Beyond data collection, consolidation, and visualisation, Enablon allows the identification of variations through consistency checks, thereby improving data quality. Its adaptable architecture facilitates the integration of new functional and regulatory requirements, while ensuring the reliability and security of the information system.
Identification of needs
Users of the tool have expressed the following expectations:
- A user-friendly, simple tool that helps detect errors and ensures reliable data entry
- Monitoring emissions evolution and trajectory to 2030 at site, company, and Group levels
- Enabling data presentation in line with standard and regulatory formats (e.g., CSRD)
Stakeholder expectations
- Monitoring site emissions within their scope and progress towards decarbonisation targets
- Assurance that Safran implements robust processes to ensure the sustainability of its activities
Solutions Implemented: A Methodical and Tailored Approach
To meet Safran’s needs, VPWhite supports administrators in energy and environmental campaigns through its Keep ON service offering:
- User management and updating of indicator and collection entity frameworks
- Updating emission factors
- Administration of collection campaigns
- Training users in tool usage
- A dedicated business hotline
- Verification of collected data
- Audit support
- Feedback loops (REX) to ensure continuous process improvement and detect deviations
To improve Enablon’s usability, VPWhite developed complementary modules (add-ons):
- Verification module: Highlights significant data variations
- Discussion module: Integrated chat within questionnaires to facilitate communication and trace interactions
To improve the management of the carbon trajectory through the Enablon tool, a tailored configuration has been set up, enabling Safran to track the actions implemented by sites to achieve its decarbonisation objectives.
Implementation Plan:
Start of year
Update frameworks (indicators, users, entities)
Collection periods
Launch campaigns, reminders, closure, follow-up in case of missing site responses, data verification, feedback (specific to energy)
During the year
Update of emission factors (specific to Energy) and continuous improvement
End of year
Preparation for and support during audits
